Portable DVD Players – is There Any Point Buying One?

Friday November 13, 2009

Many people are asking the question of whether there is a point in buying a portable DVD player. Customers are worried that with today’s ever-changing technology, they may be wasting their money on a product that will go out of date in no time at all, and that they will then have to replace it.

Blu-Ray is the newest way of watching movies; its biggest selling point is its high definition. Many shops are now stocking movies in Blu-Ray and some customers are slowly catching on. Blu-Ray discs are now even available to rent, and many new games consoles allow Blu-Ray movies to be watched. Many people argue that Blu-Ray players and discs are too expensive to buy just to get superior definition. Portable Blu-Ray players are now being developed also, so with this new technology, is there any point buying their inferior DVD counterpart? Many customers believe that yes, there is. This is partially due to the price of the portable Blu-Ray players themselves; some are up to six times more expensive than portable DVD players – is that really a price you want to pay for better quality viewing? Another factor is that Blu-Ray discs themselves are more expensive that DVDs; they both play the same movies, but the superior definition comes at a much higher price. One of the biggest things that is putting customers off the idea of portable Blu-Ray players is the fact that on such a small screen, you can’t even see the fact that the definition is that much better! Surely it makes more sense to save yourself the cash, since portable Blu-Ray players are indeed not so much better than their DVD counterparts.

Some people are questioning whether portable DVD players are worth buying in the age of the iPod. IPods can now play movies, which means that owners can watch their favourite movie wherever they are. But this isn’t as easy as you may think. To get a movie onto your iPod, you must put the DVD into your computer or laptop, download a program which will convert it into MP4, wait for this to finish and then upload it onto your iPod. Is this really better than simply sliding your favourite DVD into your bag and taking it along with you and your portable DVD player? Plus, many people criticise the fact that by playing movies on your iPod, you are only viewing them on a tiny screen – this doesn’t give the same experience as portable DVD players, especially those with wide screens, which can make it feel as though you are in the cinema when you’re actually on the go.

Portable DVD players are moving into the future; their resolution is amazing, their features such as twin screens and swivel screens are useful and ensure the comfort of the user, and there are hundreds of designs from different brands to choose from – you’re sure to find a portable DVD player that suits all of your needs!
